About the Choir and its History

The Sea Sounds Mixed Choir (Смесен хор „Морски звуци“) is an ensemble  under the auspices of  Varna Municipality with a long-standing tradition in Bulgarian choral art. In 2025 the choir celebrates its 70th anniversary.

The choir was founded in the mid-1950s by Prof. Marin Chonev (1932–2012), who remained its artistic director and principal conductor for decades. Today the Varna Choral School bears his name — the "Prof. Marin Chonev" Choral School, at 7 Musala Square.

Over the years the choir has won awards at international choral competitions across Europe and has toured abroad. Rositsa Shtereva has also been a long-serving conductor of the choir.

Today the choir's musical direction is led by conductor Dr. Valentina Georgieva and pianist-accompanist Milena Lazarova. 'Morski zvutsi' continues its active concert activities — anniversary and Christmas concerts, participation in festivals and competitions in Bulgaria and abroad.
