A Century of Music, Seventy Years of “Morski Zvutsi”

On 21 November the “Morski Zvutsi” choir, conducted by Dr. Valentina Georgieva, celebrates a double jubilee: 100 years since the founding of the music society whose name it carries, and 70 years since the founding of the representative mixed choir. One evening that brings a century of Varna’s musical history onto a single stage - and leads it forward.

Dr. Valentina Georgieva Leads the Jubilee

The jubilee programme bears the signature of Dr. Valentina Georgieva, the choir’s conductor today. It is she who conceived the evening as a journey through everything a choir can be: from Mozart and Bruckner through Bulgarian folklore to the rock stage. Under her direction the choir opens the new artistic season at an impressive pace: a festival appearance in Novi Pazar in October and the jubilee concert in November.

A Hundred Years of the Name, Seventy Years of the Choir

The name “Morski Zvutsi” (Sea Sounds) has resounded in Varna for a century. The “Morski Zvutsi” Music Society was among the pillars of the city’s musical life in the 1920s: its singers took part in the opening of the first Varna Music Festivities in 1926, the predecessor of today’s “Varna Summer” festival. In 1956 Marin Chonev founded the representative mixed choir of the Municipality of Varna, and today the ensemble is part of the “Prof. Marin Chonev” Choral School.

A hundred years later, the name “Morski Zvutsi” still means one and the same thing: Varna sings.

Together with “Chernomorski Zvutsi”

Special guests of the jubilee evening are the singers of the “Chernomorski Zvutsi” choir. The two ensembles will join voices in the folklore part of the programme and in the grand finale, where the choirs are joined by piano and a rock band.
