Adelina Chernaeva-Yolova: "The most important thing in a choir is the team"

Adelina has been a soprano in "Morski Zvutsi" since 2008, with short breaks. In a new video interview she tells how she came to the choir, which folk songs she loves most, which songs were the hardest to learn, and whether she prefers rehearsals or tours.

She found the choir through the "good old internet" in its early days. In 2008, back from university, where she had also sung, she wanted to keep singing and dug up a phone number somewhere at the municipality. The then former conductor, Rositsa Shtereva, answered: "Alright, but we have to audition you." And so it all began.

Her favourite songs are the folk ones. "Slana padna" (Frost has fallen), "Rachenitsa" and "Temna magla" (Dark fog) are among them, though, as she puts it, she cannot have just one favourite. When the choir sings them on tours and at competitions, people fall silent and listen, and for encores the choir performs only folk songs. "In a way, folk music is really ours."

The hardest songs to learn were a Hebrew song from the choir's tour in Israel, which came with subtitles, and an Austrian song about a man chased by wolves in the forest, who howl in the snow. "It was very hard, but we managed."

Her first concert was Mozart's Requiem at the festival complex in 2008. As a new member, she had extra individual rehearsals with Rositsa Shtereva to learn the piece. "When we walked onto the stage, I was very proud of myself, because I had learned it."

She prefers tours: "I love tours most. It's really fun on tour." When nobody is listening, she sings in the bathroom, where the acoustics are good, and in the car, because she is always on the move.

"The most important thing in a choir is the team."

How does she imagine "Morski Zvutsi" in five years? As a big flash mob at a mall, in the city centre or on the beach, because we all love the beach. After all, we are from Varna.
